Judges urge Congress to avoid more sequestration cuts

http://www.washingtonpost.com/politi...125_story.html

Quote:
Top federal judges in 49 states are urging lawmakers to avoid another round of automatic spending cuts that they say would have a “devastating and long-lasting impact” on the federal courts.

The unusual letter from the chief judges of trial courts in every state but Nevada says that the $350 million reduction in the judiciary’s lower budget for this year has dramatically slowed court proceedings and jeopardized public safety. The judges say there are fewer probation and other law enforcement officers to deal with record numbers of convicts who have been released from prison or given alternative sentences.

The letter was sent this week to congressional leaders in both parties in the House and the Senate. Congress is not in session in August.

“We had to let people know that we’ve cut so far past the fat and so far past the muscle that we’re into the bone,” Chief Judge Loretta Preska of the U.S. District Court in Manhattan said Thursday.

Preska, an appointee of President George H.W. Bush, helped organize support for the letter.

A second year under the automatic spending cuts known as sequestration “will have a devastating and long-lasting impact on the administration of justice in this country,” the judges said.

Spending bills that have cleared the House and Senate appropriations committees include modest increases in the judiciary’s budget. But there is no guarantee that a spending bill will win final congressional approval before the next fiscal year begins Oct. 1.

Congress will return in September to try to negotiate a long-term spending deal.

So, everyone from Defense, Justice, Education, Transportation - pretty much anyone in government - says that they cannot cut their budgets, even by 10%, or it will have "catastrophic and long-term consequences". So that's it? We spend $3.5 Trillion while we only have $2 Trillion in taxes. And nothing can be cut.

What a great position government has managed for itself. "Too important to shrink".

Personally, I think every agency could stand to tighten the belt by 10% with minimal impact. And that should just be the tip of the iceberg.

Or, raise the tax rate on everyone in America to 42%. That would balance the budget. Now, what politician is going to implement it?

Meh don't care. The government is bloated and can use the trimmings.

Not even mentioning the efficiencies of larger countries.

As divided as this country is, at least we are one.

If they stop cutting budgets, the republican plan to finish fvcking up this country will fail.

We can't allow that. The republicans have worked too hard.

I find government employees being concerned about something moving too slow to be alarming.

And comical.

The government is basically like Princess Vespa from spaceballs, when you say "take only what you need to survive" she interprets it as everything she owns.
