It is a fantastic camera and a decent lens. Enjoy.

Buy a 50mm f1.8 for $100 when you get a chance.

Look into a flash too. 430EXII is an excellent value.

Return it or trade it for my rebel T2 and I'll pay for shipping on both ends. ;-)

He is just kidding (looking for a free major upgrade.)

I have had about 15 Canon cameras (and 2 Nikons) the 60D is a fantastic value.

My DSLR history:

Nikon D60
Canon XSi
Canon T2i
Canon 60D

IMO nothing better in the same price range.

+1. I'm a Nikon shooter but I considered this and the 7d when I was getting my dslr. Can't go wrong with a 50mm or even a 35mm.

Did canon come out with the 60d or 7d replacement yet?

Well its $100 for starters.

It is a "fast" lens. Which means a few things.

It is very "sharp" because it does not need a lot of light so when you have light, it is clear.

It allows you to shoot in lower lighting without a flash at the same shutter speed as your kit lens. ie birthday party candle blow out, etc.

In addition, the lower the f stop (f1.8 vs f3.5-f5.6) produces a blurry back ground (bokeh) allowing your subject to "pop."

The more depth in focus, the more light it requires (which means you have to slow the shutter speed down or increase the iso.) The less depth in focus, the faster the shutter can be with the same light.

Read about Tv and Av settings on your camera. Don't do auto everything on a 60D (unless you are not comfortable.)

I take the same pic on different settings myself (including auto) just to make sure it comes out decent at worst case.

Have you taken any shots yet? Find a friend who owns a Canon camera or has more photography skills than you... go and shoot with them, and then decide.
