Liz Cheney and gay marriage.

Liz Cheney does not support gay marriage and is running for the US Senate in Wyoming.

Kind of strange that her younger sister is openly gay and married and her father, Dick Cheney, has come out and supported it.

Cheney (R), who is running for U.S. Senate in Wyoming against incumbent Sen. Mike Enzi (R), said the issue should ultimately be decided by states, reported The Daily Caller.

Reinforcing her stance on abortion and same-sex marriage, Liz Cheney stated Friday, "I am strongly pro-life and I am not pro-gay marriage."

The statement made no mention of Cheney's family, for whom the issue of same-sex marriage is more than a talking point. Cheney's younger sister Mary is openly gay and married her partner last year. Their father, former Vice President Dick Cheney, has come out in support of same-sex marriage.

"I believe the issue of marriage must be decided by the states, and by the people in the states, not by judges and not even by legislators, but by the people themselves," Liz Cheney said in her statement.

The statement was released after Cheney's campaign got wind of pollsters asking voters about Cheney supporting abortion and "aggressively" promoting gay marriage.

"The people of Wyoming deserve an honest campaign," Cheney said, denying the poll's implications. "They should not be subject to the kind of dirty tricks this push poll represents.

"This is dirty tricks politics at its worst," added Celeste Colgan, a Cheney campaign spokesperson.

There is nothing in her statements quoted where she does not personally support same-sex marriage.

However, I disagree that it is can be a matter for the courts to decide. If a unconstitutional law is passed it is the responsibility of the judicial branch to rule on the constitutionality of that law if it brought before them.

Her sister, Mary Cheney, speaks out against Liz

Quote:
(CNN) - Mary Cheney, daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney and sister of Wyoming GOP Senate candidate Liz Cheney, said her sister was "dead wrong" in her statements about same-sex marriage last week.

"For the record, I love my sister, but she is dead wrong on the issue of marriage," Mary Cheney wrote in a private Facebook post Friday night, according to The New York Times.
