Want to move to a 5 series in next 12 months or so, couple of ?s

As the title says, I want to move to a steptronic 530i in the next 12-18 months. Reasons are as follows:

-Wife can't drive stick, have tried to teach her but isn't getting it. It is tough having a car the wife can't drive(we have two kids and an odyssey is the mom/kid mobile). Plus, rush hour traffic sucks and I find myself on the phone a lot, and even hands free the 5 speed sometimes is tough.

-330 has about 150k on it, within next 12 months will have 180, 18 months 190-200k. This is about my comfortable limit.

-No space for the family, just as well be a coupe really.

So, that being said I have always liked the E39. My pops had two of them when they were new, and he never maintained either of them well and they were still reliable. Also, they can be had for about 10k now with pretty low miles( 60-80k). I figure if I buy it for 10k, put a grand into the cooling system/misc maintenance I should have clear skies for about 100k if it has been anything like my 3.

So, am I off base in thinking that the 5 will be as reliable as the 3? Similar year, same motor etc.. Am I missing something? Is there a simple fix for the pixel problem?

Also, It'd be nice to get an 04-05 E60 with the M54 but i'm concerned about being able to DIY repairs/maintenance, and also concerned about the reliability of some of the newer electronics(I-drive etc). Are these concerns legit or can I expand my search?

I tend to research cars for at least a year before I pull the trigger, so now is the time that I start to research/test drive etc. I find that doing it this way makes it very easy to spot a deal on a good car when I am ready to pull the trigger.

Thanks In Advance,

E60 is so much uglier than an e39. An e39 530i sport sounds perfect for what your looking for and you wouldnt lose money on the switch.

My thoughts exactly, although the E60 has grown on me and aside from reliability concerns would be a contender.

I will be out approximately 7k on the switch though as I will be going from an almost 200k 3 series to a 5 series with 60-80k. Figure I can sell my 330i as long as it doesn't blow up first for about 3k when it has that kind of mileage.

The plan is to start saving up that money without it effecting my other finances. IMO taking out a loan on a used out of warranty BMW is about as smart as picking your nose with a soldering iron.....

Equally stupid in my opinion is buying an econobox that I hate driving that the factory warranty will expire in 1 year after I buy it due to the mileage....

My Ride: is slow
My dad has an '03 530i that just hit 70k. He's had it for some years now, and it's been pretty reliable. Most of the cooling system has been done. As for the pixel problem, he had it fixed under warrenty. The clusters were replaced and it cost about a grand, and took them nearly week.

When I was buying a new car. A 60000 mile 530i in phoenix (where I lived last) was selling for 6500.
Deals are to be had on the e39. They're depreciated.

Just an example of what I see on ebay currently. Definitely high for what I would pay, but this is why I start researching a year out. I have no issues flying across the country to pick up a good car for a good deal though.

You pick the e60 m5. Not an e60 525i which is likely the only e60 in his price range in decent condition.

Second: did I say my car was better looking than an e60?

Third: my car is better looking than an e60.

Have you ever driven an e60?. The feel between an e39 and an e60 isn't even close.

I'm sure everyone who sees your stock non-sport E46 is like WOW LOOK AT THAT BIMMER OMG AMAZING THUMBS UP. NURBURGRING?! MUST BE FAST.

Get the E39, you're on a budget and doesn't sound like you need things like heads up display, iDrive, better console area, etc.

Damn your jimmies get rustled easily.

My car isn't fast. Never will be. But it looks good with coilovers and m68s. I'm happy at least.
I have driven on the nurburgring hence why I bought the sticker. You don't see a "so good" or "illest" sticker.

I didn't get a BMW to be a badge whore but that seems to be something that you pride yourself on.

my vote goes for a nice e39 525it unless you can afford the gas of the 540it, similar interior set up as the e46 so acclimating to it will be easy.

Idk about you but I rarely see a white upper middle classed person in an early e60. It's like the e65/66 7 series if you know what i mean.

E39 looks old but it's aged better than the pre-facelift e60's.
