[Solved]E46 325i 2002 - 1500--3000 RPM stutter

Problem description:
Driving an any gear 1500-3000 RPM partial (maybe 60% throttle) car would jerk at random RPM's. Beyond 3000 RPM the car would drive just fine.
Problem is especially noticeable in hills, where there is more load on the engine.

Parts replaced:
Replaced Bosch platnum 4+ plugs with NGK R's (advised by mechanic over at RRT). After replacing parts, car felt even better but still had that stutter.

Suggestions received:
-A friend of mine thinks that one of my o2 sensor is out of range.
-Mechanic thinks MAF needs replacing due to previous P0102 code.
-Mechanic also thinks it could be one of the coils acting up.

I have searched the threads and found that a DME upgrade fixed the issue for most but that's for 03+ 330 MS45's I believe, I've yet to see someone with an 01/02 E46 M54/M52 (MS43/MS42) see this issue resolved with the DME update.

I don't really want to spend $100 per part and not find the issue.
I'd really like to test the o2 sensor to see if it is out of range and causing the stutter, so if anyone's in the Northern VA area that wouldn't mind helping me out. I'll buy you a case of beer of your choice.

I do have a 2001 330i 5spd MT in the shop with exact same problem. It drives fine, but only with partial throttle going from first into second or second into third gear %50 throttle low rpm, engine starts cutting out and jerking like a two cylinders are misfiring but there are not codes trown by the DME.
I will diagnose it more today and tomorrow, coils don't go bad, its the insulation on the coil that cracks and spark jumps out of it but there would be misfire code. I will monitor live data from the DME and see what is making this problem

I've already checked my coils; no cracks, although I did find oil in cyilender #5, not sure if that's causing the issue.

CEL was for MAF P0102 I believe.

Vanos was replaced with a unit from dr. Vanos just over two years ago.

I've yet to seafoam it. I thought about the DISA valve but haven't checked that yet.

I'm waiting on my BMtechnic software to test out the vanos and possibly the o2 sensor.

I could not find the problem. Feels like a lean miss, but no codes.

I had the same problem you are describing. I ended up replacing all of my plug coils and it got rid of the problem. It's been about 1 year, no problems since. Good luck.

I will inspect the coil plugs and post up pics, thanks.

So I think I've found the issue.

I've replaced all of the coil boots and drove for about 34 miles.

I've also checked the lambda and they look within range.

No jerks so far!

Any chance we can get those pics uploaded to imgur so they don't disappear again?

I am having the exact same issues (stutter + P0102), but I'm not sure what coil boots are or if that's what solved your problem.

Please help! Thank you in advance.

So am I correct in understanding P0102 went away after changing coil boots?

Re: [Solved]E46 325i 2002 - 1500--3000 RPM stutter

I will put the pics up again tomorrow
The p0102 problem is related to the air mass meter or mass airflow sensor.
Changing the boots fixed the stuttering not the cel of the mass airflow sensor.
There are a lot of people who changed their mass airflow sensors and the intake boots and still have that light come up now and then. I believe that light is too sensitive. Ive cleared my cel and it has not come back but it's not related to the intake boots

Sorry meant to say I believe that the mass airflow sensor is too sensitive. Not the light is too sensitive
