E36 ran hot..wont start

hey guys -- so I know this is an e36 question and I am sure some people will frown on this...but....ya'll have always been helpful with E36 questions also, so, my neighbor has an E36 vert, nice car. It ran hot over the weekend, I dont think he cooked the the motor but now it wont start -- is there some safty feature we need to disable?

thanks!

Figure out why it overheated first.

Did it throw the belt?

If it's not cranking, then the battery is just flat. If it's cranking, then the engine's probably dead somehow.

Most people think they shut it off on time. Most don't. There is no safety feature against an overheat. The engine is not working. So I think its done.

Im not sure on the belt, it was off when I went over to look at it....I guess my question is more so...even if the headgasket is fried it should still run, just very poorly, right? I doubt the E36 has a system like this...I dont even think the 46's do, but, if it runs hot and then you shut her down, is there anything you need to do to be able to start it again or it should just start right up, right?

Should start up again.

I think your neighbor is probably saying something like "but it was only in the red for a short time." He's thinking that a few minutes in that zone isn't a big deal, but it is for the M52/54. Ask him how long it really was overheated. I'm betting it was at least a minute or two and with a failed WP, that's a recipe for disaster.

It won't start or it won't turn over?

If the belt was gone, the battery is probably weak/discharged since tehre was no alternator charging.

But also, if he ran it long enough after that for the battery to go flat, then the head is definitely toast.

all is true, Im going to do a compression test today after work and we will know! Is there any sort of temp sensor that could have been damaged causing it not want to start?

Nothing will keep it from turning over that's associated with temp.
