AEM or aFe?

I have a 323i and I plan on adding a short ram intake. I found AEM and aFe on amazon and will pick one of them up. They both have heat shields and both are dry filters. This will be the begining of my performance upgrade. I plan on getting software upgrades too within the month. Then exhaust.

We have had great success with the aFe Intake for your E46, its one of our most popular systems! We now carry two systems for your car. If you move to exhaust, Remus makes a fantastic system for your car! Let me know if you need help with anything and good luck!

Hmmmm....ok...What's the difference between stage 1 and stage 2 aFe intake?

The stage 1 actually comes with an aluminum filter cover and the stage 2 does not offer the cover, it just has the heat shield and just mounts in the stock intake location.

AFE is what I had. Here's a vid of how it sounded on my car but it's a 330, not a 323 like yours . Stage 1

Awesome sound! It DOES look GOOD too!! This is my first Bimmer...I'm used to Hondas and Acuras, but as soon as I drove this car...it was a wrap!

Does cover protect the element from heat more so than the stage 2? Or is it more cosmetic?

So does that mean stage 2 heat soak?

I have the stage 1 AFE intake that the PO of my car put on. He gave me the stock intake per my request when I picked up the car. Outside of the car sounding louder I could not feel any power increase.

Eh, maybe it was placebo effect but in the higher rpm it pulled a bit better. I went back to an OEM intake because this one was rattling too much in idle. I noticed that the OEM one had an immediate response unlike the afe.

So maybe just keep OEM box and put in a drop in k&n or aFe? If these short rams give you no added power...just sound. That's what it sounds like you guys are saying.

i wanna purchase the aFe stage 1 for my 2001 330i but it shows on the mod bargains website, that it won't work with cars that have xenon. Can someone explain why?

Because the headlight ballast is in the way of where the new airbox would be placed.

The Injen has not had the clearance issues and has been another popular seller!
