I hate that the hood doesn't include the kidney grill (like the E46) or at least meet the top of the kidneys (like the E9x). The seam 6" up the hood is terrible.

+1

That seam is truly terrible on a light colored car.

Looks great, that seam is hideous though.

and it really pains me to see the M4 badge, it just doesn't look right.

The reason the hood is like that is because of new European laws http://www.caranddriver.com/features...fatter-feature

That seem is indeed terrible. Just like the F10 5 Series...I can't stand it. The hoods when standing alone look oldschool because of how squared they are at the seam.

There's ups and downs to that seam. Replacing a front bumper over an entire hood and kidney grills is MUCH better if you get in a light fender bender. Also, you can reduce a whole bunch of weight when minimizing the hood size. Lastly, it is a PIA to get the gap and flushness right on the previous hood versus this hood. I'm sure BMW is saving quite a bit of money with that decision. All that being said, yeah it looks pretty out of place.

As stated above it isn't about saving money, it is about pedestrian crash safety laws in the EU.

I should have been more clear about stating that those are my opinions of why that hood isn't all bad. As for pedestrian safety, the junction between the hood and bumper isn't what is most important; they care about the distance from the lower skin to the engine and the angle of the front end and hood.

There's quite a few BMW's that don't have that style hood (some don't even meet the distance requirement) and they still pass by introducing explosives at the rear hood hinges. Basically, forcibly raise the hood up during a pedestrian collision and reduce the overall impact.

The new laws require the whole front end to be plastic.

Ah, yeah that would make sense then. Surprisingly, as much as that front hood gap doesn't look appealing to me in a picture I saw a 4-series coupe up close a few weeks ago and it was damn gorgeous. I'd imagine the M4 would have the same effect.
