My Ride: E36 DD, E30 race car
Newby BMW racer

Bought a black '01 330i sedan off of Craigslist yesterday. It will be replacing the e36 DD.

I've lots of experience wrenching on e30's because this is my 5th year of racing SpecE30, a race class of similarly prepared 1987-'91 325's. I'm currently working my butt off building a new race car after having it's predecessor reach end-of-life into a cement wall at 85mph at Road Atlanta in December. An e36 right in front of me lost his radiator and blew water all over the track. I went sideways when I hit the water and then right into the wall.

Build thread (which also contains a link to the crash thread and video goodness) http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum....php?t=1757926

I got the e46 for cheap. It's paint is screaming for cutting compound to remove sun and water damage, and the interior looks sad. There's also a number of warning lights. Give me a month tho and all that will be taken care of.

Looking at the idiot lights on the dash forces me to recognize just how completely limited to e30's my knowledge is. Last weekend I removed the entire rear end from both old race car and new race car, and then installed the cherry one from the old car to the new one. And I knew what I was doing because I've done it several times before. But on the e46, I look at the service engine light, what looks like a stability control light, and an airbag light and think "dang, I don't hardly even know where to start figuring those out".

This morning I drove the e46 to work for the first time. It's nicely quieter than the e36 328 and has clearly more power. Very nice.

I can't post pics because they kinda make me cringe. The car has awful chrome bits on it that have to go, 19" wheels that I'm not crazy about, and aftermarket tailights that are kinda garish. I need to find an OEM airbox and tan armrest. But even with it's problems, it's still a 330i with 146k mi. for $6k.

On the personal side, I'm a retired military type, now a computer geek, married to a lawyer-chick, and we've 3 boys in grade-school. When I'm not wrenching on the e30 I do triathlons and am a bookworm.

Welcome. Sounds like a fun project! I have my stock airbox from an 05 330 that I imagine would work. PM me if interested.
