I typically run my M3 like this:

Daily Setup: S3, DSC On, Sport OFF use manual mode all the time.
Snow Mode: S1, DSC On, Sport Off manual all the time
Spirited driving: S3 or S5, DSC on, Sport ON manual
Getting new tires installed in a few minutes... S6, DSC OFF, Sport ON in manual

Recently, I started using the auto mode in places that honest there is no point in pulling the paddles...

In town driving (light to light BS) Auto S2, DSC On, Sport Off

I quite like the auto mode in sub 25 MPH traffic, and if you need, just yank the paddles and go into manual.

I typically reset my SMG weekly, or every other week, but my car gets driven a few times a week, not every day.

In my opinion it is fantastic and by nature it prevents over revving. Once you obtain the experience and confidence in running with DSC off you have the fastest shifting vehicle on the track. That along with rev matching down shifts you realize why F1, V8 Super cars, and most every road course series run some sort of paddle shift system. While the SMG II has its quirks, when run flat out on the track it really rises to the top. Of coarse the SMG III in the M6 is a more refined system and the DCT in the late model cars is smooth like butter.
Once again in my humble opinion.

s1-5 controls the shifting speed vs smoothness right? how does that affect mpg?

more importantly, how does clutch wear get affected? smg clutch seems to last much longer than stick shift clutches. in ferrari and lambos, it's the opposite.
