Time to replace Meyle HD Outer Ball Joint

Looks like I got a bum part - the Meyle HD control arms that I installed two years ago have failed. Rather, the passenger side outer ball joint has failed.

Everything else is nice and tight, so I'd like to attempt the ball joint replacement only.

I'm sure someone else has done this. Can it be done on the car with one of the "C" clamp ball joint presses?

Any tips?

I did search, but didn't find anything.

Thanks!

I'm sure it can be done on the car with the right tools. I have seen E36 outer ball joints replaced this way. The problem is you need the E46 specific tooling. Good luck finding it.

I have pressed in new ball joints with the control arm out of the car. It was a minor PITA because I had to make several mandrels for removal and installation. Also, whacking the inner ball joint with a pickle fork to pull the control arm can tear the boot requiring replacement of that ball joint as well. Of course, the tooling to remove/install the inner ball joint is not the same size as the tooling for the outer joint.

I have ZHP control arms in the garage waiting to be installed in my E46 because I'm tired of crappy, rubber potted E46 ball joints.
