5 speed manual for the 325xi

I've been looking around trying to source a manual tranny for a swap. I found one with relatively low mileage (48k) but the ID tag looks like something was dragged across it and I can't read a thing on it other than the zf logo. The guy at the junkyard said he believes it would fit 2001-2004 xi's. My ETK shows 3 different part numbers for 5 speed ZF transmissions:

23 00 7 502 658 with an effective out date of 03/03

23 00 7 527 111 with an effective in date of 03/03 and out date of 09/03

23 00 7 531 644 with an in date of 09/03

He doesn't have the chassis anymore to check on the mfg date. All he knows is it was out of an '03 325xi wagon

thanks for any help in advance.

Find redbull's thread on mating an early gearbox with a later TC. Should explain it.

Regarding the clutch side- there are three different clutch part numbers.

If you get the right clutch kit, you can make it fit using redbull's thread.

He used a 6 speed, not a 5 so I don't know how useful the write-up will be.

Yes redbull is the opposite of my situation. Perhaps I will just look for a late model 5 or 6 speed, I would prefer a 6 anyways. Is there any discrepancy in the bellhousing bolt holes matching up with the block?
