My 325XI

So I bought a 2002 XI from a douche bag who didn't bother to tell me all that was wrong with the car.
The next morning I started the car, I hear backfiring in the intake manifold, misfire, stumble and stalling, oil leak. Front pass axle long dead, SES, check filler cap light. And on top of this I know nothing about Bimmers...never really liked them at all.
So I hops on the internet discover e46fanatics.com started reading and thus began my journey. I replaced DISA seal
http://www.ebay.com/itm/330889349186...84.m1439.l2649
Intake manifold gasket, all injector O rings, air distributor O rings, all vacuum lines, vac plug ,fuel filter, fuel pump swapped to walbro 255, pre-cat 02 sensors, fuel pump locking ring
http://www.ebay.com/itm/181169188168...84.m1439.l2649
fuel pump gasket
http://www.ebay.com/itm/141065971166...84.m1439.l2649
Fuel cap
http://www.ebay.com/itm/400574832950...84.m1439.l2649
02 sensors
http://www.ebay.com/itm/BOSCH-13477-...29d62b&vxp=mtr
throttle body gasket, ICV grommet, VCG, rebuilt the VANOS, replaced drive belts and water pump, OFHG , VCC.And I still had P0171, P0174, P1351.
Try as I might I could not find the leak until I pulled the oil filler cap and blew into the valve cover. Leak was at the dipstick tube, the O ring was missing, so I put one in there and voila! I was able to pass emission.

Pre-purchase inspection is your friend, remember that for the next car. Also, don't buy parts for your car on ebay, I envision you doing all of that work again sooner rather than later due to crappy parts. Use Amazon and many of the vendors on this site.

I've been buying and selling on eBay for years...so am I selling crap? The engine is perfect right now. Will post pics of my eBay rotors and pads. Anything is better than this vibrating mass that is both annoying and embarrassing to me and whoever might be in the car with me.

No, you don't need to get all righteous on him because you sometimes sell stuff on eBay. The point he is making is that with eBay, you don't know who the seller is and whether or not the parts are good. If they are cheap, there is a reason for that. His recommendation, mine, and that of the rest of the members here, is to buy quality parts from sellers like the site sponsors. You can find reviews of their products on here. Good luck!

+1+1
If you don't know about the car (even if you do) pre-purchase inspection is really mandatory. What made you think the seller would tell you what's wrong? Caveat Emptor my friend...

You can find real parts on Ebay if you look carefully. Especially some used stuff. The warning is about the cheap off-brand junk. Not doing yourself any favors when it fails.

Good luck with the car.

eBay parts :-/

Makes me cringe....

Just FYI OP, parts can be had from our sponsors for sometimes not much more than eBay and they will be good quality.

sounds cool...keep at it. I check Ebay (looking at brand) but usually do find things for about the same or cheaper by hitting 4 or 5 good online suppliers. Used Rockauto for all my Subaru and Dodge parts for years and they were always great.
As mentioned, some of the sponsors and others are great and lightning fast shipping etc. ECS, FCP Groton, got all my suspension stuff from TunerSports, BMA parts, Pelican (great tutorials and advice) the list goes on. RealOEM is your friend...enter last 7 digits of your VIN and switch over to image drill down.
Also, this is a nice overview of everything:
http://www.bimmerfest.com/wiki/index.php?title=BMW_E46
Incidentally, my local dealer comes in cheapest for oil and filter when you factor in shipping...interesting and always good to check on silly stuff w/them.
I'm all about saving money so I always shop around. It's going to take some dough to bring your girl back but the satisfaction of DIY outweighs the frustration and you'll have a great car.
Good luck!

What an ebay seller advertises vs what they actually ship can sometimes be very different. I advise huge caution when it comes to buying parts from ebay. I've come to just hate that place in general these days.

Sorry to disappoint but I just finished installing and test driving the eBay rotors and pads...no more vibration. Perfect fitment, innocent until proven guilty is my theory. Also found a few discrepancies in the pass side caliper...parts were ordered from ecs tuning.

...until hes replacing the same parts again next year. I learned my lesson with window regulators.
Same thing with my wifes camry; how bad can off brand rotors be? They warped within a year. I just buy OE or OEM from now on.

augustus, why did you buy a unloved E46 if you don't even like them? You better love your bmw with all the issues they have over a japanese vehicle. I don't get it.

I refuse offers for this car, son.

Don't hate my XI rocks. Udated...rotors are quality, the pads are not, they wont last a year as expected. Come spring I'm dropping in Bilsteins and some name brand ceramic pads. She needs nothing else boys.
