New Harmonic Damper

I have contacted ATI about making more dampers and they did not seem very enthusiastic.
In my searches I saw the post from McSpeed "here's a pretty good harmonic damper writeup I came across:"
http://www.bhjdynamics.com/index.php...e7oh7js6h8gfa4 <<< Updated link 5/28/2014

So I contacted BHJ about making dampers for us and they are very interested. This looks very promising and at a much more realistic price.

Here is our correspondence so far:

Have you looked into making a harmonic damper for a BMW M54B30 engine? The E46 community is starved for one.
ATI made a run of them and they were all pre-sold....ATI does not seem too interested in making them despite selling every one they made. Looks like a pretty easy market to penetrate to me. Please let me know if you have any interest or have you looked into it before.
------------------------------------
We tackle projects like this all the time. Requests for BMW applications come and go here, but we have yet to have someone/some company commit to an actual project for any BMW. At this time, incoming new projects will have a development start date in mid, to late January. First come, first serve, so the sooner we get a commitment for a project, the closer to the front of the line you will be.
Let me know what you have in mind regarding quantities. We have done deals with clubs before, where you generate 10 or more orders and we can cut down on development costs. There is a $250.00 commitment fee before we start, which is non-refundable, but gets credited toward the development costs of the project.
Thank you for the email,
------------------------------------
.... Do you have a ballpark price for 10 to 30? The link to the drawing should give you a good idea of the size and material.
ATI gets $300 to $400 for a harmonic damper, but they asked a lot more for the BMW part. I think it would easy to sell a bunch without the ridiculous price. I am in contact with a couple performance shops that are also very interested in selling them. I know this is all talk until you see the orders, but there is a real demand and a lot of forum talk as evident by the links I sent. Thank you for looking into this.
------------------------------------
We will need to get a OE damper in for ultimate reference. We will then tune the new damper based on our frequency and inertia tests of that OE damper. We typically only use existing ATI dampers if our customer wants us to make comparative frequency and inertia tests for reference.
There will be a price difference for 10 than for 30. The $300-$400 range should be doable, based on the final package in this case, if we make at least 10 of them - the more we make at one time, the better for the price.
FYI, I have another customer who is looking for a replacement S52 damper at this time as well...
Let me know if you can get a good-condition OE damper to send in and we'll take it from there.

Does anyone have a damper we can send to BHJ?

Would something like this be considered a commercial group buy? Or is this a situation were we are working together to get something so many of us want so it would be allowed?

Email me if this gets off the ground at crcragg at gmail dot com.

If this can work on a S52 and retain AC, then you should post this on bimmerforums too as there are about 5 people interested in one that is AC compatible.

I am trying to get permission to do this on the forum. We need to run it like a group buy, but we are doing this as customers, not the vendor so I do not know the rules apply. I sent a message to get ger permission, but never heard back. I will try again. Maybe, in this case, we ask for forgiveness.
I will start a list of people offline. Can everyone interested send an email to me todd@teamspirit.net

Interesting, but I'm skeptical since ATI has such a good reputation. We'll see what comes of this. Maybe I cam try and talk to ATI again and see what they say.

My advice on the group buy though I'm sure you already know - get full payment up front or a non-refundable deposit from everyone who says they're in. Can't tell you how many times I've been burned by people who say they're in and then slow roll me when the product is ready to ship.

It's simple, people don't give a crap if others get burned or not. As long as it benefits them. It's sad.
