i ran over a dead raccoon

monday evening.

I have a Ci and it's as low to the ground as stock suspension for it is but it hit pretty hard. Immediately afterwards my car started making a knocking sound. Couldn't feel it, but it was loud. I pulled over as soon as it was safe and looked under the car, didn't see anything. (I assumed it knocked something loose.)

The car wasn't overheating and I did not get a CEL so I just slowly drove it the rest of the way home but the knocking stopped about 20 seconds after I started driving again.

Today each time I started the car and pulled out of my spot in reverse I heard a knocking sound, and it went away a couple of seconds after I started driving forward. It is most noticable when the wheel is turned.

What could that be? I just replaced the front control arms three weeks ago and then got an alignment and a balance. I can't imagine the body of a raccoon could ruin my control arms.

What could that be? I hit in the middle of the car too. I looked today in daylight and can't see anything out of the ordinary but in reverse and not while first driving the car it is noticeable. Not at stop lights/signs, or turning. Just immediately after startup. Whether it be a cold stop or a 2 minute stop at the gas station.

Is the knocking related to speed?
Maybe there is something in your fan, or the fan was damaged?

The soul if the dead raccoon! Luckily it wasn't a skunk!

Get the car on a lift.

Inspect area of impact for damage.
Fan might get out balance?? Sounds like something got loose.

Check first, it should be easy to spot.

Tastes like chicken!

Road kill can do serious damage to the front and underside of the car, especially with all the plastic parts.

You sure it was not a Oppossum? Maybe it had babbies on board and they are inhabitting your undercarrage... No really it sounds like something loose or something stuck underneath.

You NOW need a Jamaican voodoo priestess to exorcise the spirits of the departed (pun intended) animal.

That sucks. I hit an opossum and the poor bugger took out the plastic bit that houses the outside temperature sensor. Roadkill can do some damage.

As others have said, I would raise the car, remove the under panels, and look for obvious stuff, then report back.

Check for body parts.

Sounds like maybe something is still dragging, or you got some body part maybe in the rotor area of the wheel. I'm guessing sound may still be there moving forward but you might be moving fast enough not to hear it.

goto a self car wash and just pressure wash the wheel well.. you'll probably see a raccoon head fall out.
