Just buy two. One goes bad, you have a backup. The chances of both going bad before you buy another is 0.00001%

Buy the 2.5" non power supply ones (they are made for laptops so they handle shock better)

I hope so too, I'm pretty confident that it will be fine though.

The 2.5" is what failed on me. It was nothing to do with shock though, I think it's something in the control board because it spins up but won't mount when I plug it in.

What does non power supply mean?
Non power supply means it doesn't have an external power supply and is powered by the USB connection.

So for a non power supply it only turns on when connected to a computer?

- External Hard Drives -

Don't buy the hard plastic 250gb from toshiba. Mine broke only after one use. It had been packed away for months before I tried to use it.

did you try pulling the drive out and physically connecting it to your computer? i think a lot of WD externals have that same problem.

The drive is soldered to a control board and the USB plugs into the board. Outside of the external plastic shell there's not much to take apart.

oh forgot about those models. that sucks. those have a lot of problems like being picky with the wires and sometimes you have to go into disk management and change the drive letter for explorer to recognize it. annoying as hell.
