I'm not sure...I installed it when I had the transmission out for a clutch and flywheel. I did a Google search and came up with this:

It's for an E36, but from memory, this looks very similar to my E46. I believe the shifter sits behind the transmission as in the E36, so it may only require unhooking the driveshaft from the back of the transmission.

Looks feasible. I can't imagine SSKs would be so popular if they all required dropping the transmission to install.
