Thumbs Up Radium Engineering E46 M3 Oil Catch Can Install and Review

I have always wanted to get an Oil Catch Can but I hesitated as everyone said there is no real need for it on an NA motor. Well after member stash1 posted the contents of his Oil Catch Can ( http://www.m3forum.net/m3forum/showthread.php?t=443850 ) it prompted me into looking for one because I didn't want the gunk in my engine. I came upon a few of them which were pretty high quality and a lot of people also suggested building one from here and there and how that would be so much cheaper.

What I wanted was a high quality PnP application as I often do not have enough time to work on my own car. I came across the RADIUM ENGINEERING's newly released S54 E46 M3 Oil Catch Can. The quality looked amazing to start with so I shot them an email and they quickly replied back. Next day I had paid for it and it was on its way and when it arrived.........I knew I had made the right decision in going with Radium.

The kit came very well and safely packaged with all the parts you'll need to install the catch can including clear, detailed step by step instructions with pics. So I got around to installing it today and didn't let the FLU stop me LOL.

The Oil Catch Can itself.....

All the parts in the kit ready to install.....

Rubber support gromit installed (only for cars from 03-06 MY).....

Bracket Installed.....

Oil Catch Can Installed Loosely....

Cutting the Valve Cover Ventilation Hose to remove the connectors.....

Hoses Clamped with supplied Clamps to the correct locations on the valve cover and OEM CSL Airbox.....

Catch Can Installed and Tightened all Connectors etc. love the attention to detail on Radium's products. Notice the little green dipstick....

In this Pic the hoses are installed the wrong way around on the catch can. My Mistake....

Corrected and Completed Install.....

We Will have to see how much Gunk it collects lol. As I don't drive my car much or don't get the chance to drive it much it might be a while.

I just thought I would let all you good people know about http://www.radiumauto.com/default.aspx and their excellent service and products.

Thanks for reading.

Very nicely done, and not a bad price, like $270 for the can and the 2 fittings. I may have to put this on my list, getting oil blow by out of any car be it NA or turbo is a good thing. A CC was the best mod I ever did to my old APR tuned Mk5 GTI!

Thanks bro. By the way the price is $299.95 not including the petcock drain kit.

Ahh I am a little inebriated and math is hard sometimes haha. Would you suggest gettng the petcock drain kit? My GTI just had a larger like 5mm allen keyd plug you pulled out to drain.. it didn't bother me really.

The drain kit depends on your install location and needs. I see that it's easier for me to unscrew the bottom of the catch can to empty it so I didn't opt for the drain kit.

Nice review. If I had a CSL intake or forced induction I would get one.

Yea looks like its a bit of an easier job on the M3 Well, I e-mailed guys at Radium and asked for install instructions. And also, I found this http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=669968
I thought that would be applicable for the install of radium catch can, but guys from radium said that it does not replace the OEM oil separator completely, but works together with it.

No Not really. It just diverts the vapors from the CCV to the can and not recirculate them back into the engine. So all that gunk is not fed back into your engine.

I can see where one of these would be great for a DI motor. Port FI basically washes away gunk on the intake valves, including CCV gunk. DI, on the other hand, obviously does not, what with the injector being post intake valve, and I've been reading some real tales of woe of DI motor intakes/valves being totally gunked up.

I completely deleted my ccv and connected the return hose to my distribution rail on the intake, would this pose any problems?

ok so its been more than a year ive had the catch can installed. Due to some issues with the car not related to the catch can I didn't drive it much, over the last year. So around 3-4000km. The catch can was around half full. The liquid present in the ca was off a milky consistency and that's probably due to our dusty environment here. So well worth it.
