Manual Vert Crank Handle? Where?

While I was able to get my '01 M3 vert project car top working again (it was just a limit switch adjustment; God looks after fools and children), I'm searching for the manual top crank handle thing.

PO says he never saw it. Owners manual says behind rear seat center cushion?
I removed cushion (I guess it isn't an armrest?), and found a ski bag just sorta folded up there. Is there supposed to be a ski bag door or cover which the crank handle fits into? My previous (all non vert) german ski bag cars have all had some sort of door on interior side

Found a hinged door on the trunk side, with a (sub?) speaker in it? Apparently must be a buried sub, as little chance of any sound getting through ski bag and center cushion. (Did I mention that the HK stereo in this car sounds sorta muddy?)

It is under not behind the rear seat centre cushion. If you cannot see it, pull the entire rear seat bottom.
