suspension or wheels first?

hi guys, i got my 2002 e46 xi like 6 months ago. repaired every single thing in the car when i bought it. so its in tip top condition, except for an unknown oil leak which i am currently sorting out. my car came with a bmw style 47 16 inch rims which i feel like its too small. so i have decided to get some apex 17x9 wheels and fk high sport coil-over to lower it a bit, because the ride height is crazy. should i get the wheels first or the suspension? i really want to get the wheels first, because it cost more and my dad is helping me buy it. it cost 1100$. if i wait and get the coil-over first i don't think he will help me get the wheels next month. the coil-over cost 600$ which i think i can manage to get next month. what do you guys think? and should i go for a 17x8.5 or 17x9? i i just want to be safe and dont want to modify anything. turner-motorsport say both wheels will fit my car.
my car is silver in color so i am leaning more to the hyper black color than silver. thanks

Get the wheels first since you'll get some $$ help getting them. Then buy the suspension next month. No brainer decision based on how you described your situation. If you want to see how hyper black looks, check out my ride with hyper black wheels.

If you want my honest opinion, save your money for college and don't buy either. There will be a time when you wish you'd have an extra $1k of money sitting around rather than dropping it on wheels. When you're in a place where you don't need your dad's help to buy new wheels then go ahead and get them. Over the years I've learned that spending money on cosmetic mods and unnecessary "performance" mods is a gigantic waste of time and money, just wanted to pass that experience on to you.

Don't listen to these old farts do some fun stuff with your car and have your dad help you put it on. It's an awesome bonding experience. everyone on here just beats in "keep it stock" do what you want.

college is not my problem, i go to catholic university of America and i am on my second year currently. its more expensive than Harvard and since i am a diplomat and being sponsored by my country. school is free for me. the problem is cant work here because i am diplomat. so i rely on my dad who gives me monthly allowance of 500. half of that money instantly goes to my spoil girlfriend or my mom my dad has a 2012 Mercedes cls550 which he pours money into . i rather let him waste money on my car than his. thats all. he will eventually buy the coilover too. so i am just really taking advantage of him i know its a waste but better waste on my car than his. btw his car already looks good.

Id get the rims first and then the coil overs so you know how low you want the car without it rubbing. FK coils are a good option btww

Well good for you but no one gives a fvck if your school is more expensive but less exclusive than Harvard. You are in a far better position that 99% of the people on the planet but I still maintain my position on what to do with a car. I love them as much as the next guy but pointlessly throwing your money in the toilet for new wheels or suspension is just a waste. If you needed a new suspension or new wheels then by all means go for the upgrade, but doing it to look cool is a waste.

FWIW I'm not at all old at all as I'm 28 (just turned 28), but I've learned a lot more about life in the past 4-5 years out of college than I have ever imagined.
