Unhappy strange no-start need help!

For some time the car made a loud "click" but would not crank, so I replaced the starter (new valeo unit) and that problem has been solved, but now I have a new one:

Now, every couple of days, I go to start the car (its an SMG) brake/Neutral, turn the key and there's a series of clicks and pump-like-sounds (not much else I can say). The car sometimes works again in 10 minutes, sometimes won't start for a few days. I suspected the salmon relay and replaced that with a new one--no luck!

I've used INPA to confirm that the SMG pump is producing between 50-70bar of pressure, so I think the pump is fine. The pressure slowly falls and then the pump comes back on again, takes several minutes. Also, there are no warning lights on the dash. I have also used INPA to "Put in Gear" and have no problems shifting into all gears.

is it possible that my new valeo starter is bad??? Today I ran a wire to the starter solenoid's trigger wire and am reading ~0.05V when attempting to crank, which is strange to me, I would expect 0 or something close to 12. I'll double check the ground I used.

DME/other systems show no relevant faults, SMG is showing some strange fault code:
SMG - (055) 37 Switch on frequency, hydraulic unit (OBD: P1716) --implausible value ---
- Connecting Frequency B2360_S2HEH"

I think what is happening is the pump is switching on-off-on-off-on-off when I crank (I do hear repeated clicks and some other pump or fluid like noise) and that gives the error of switch on frequency.

Any ideas?!?!? I really don't want to take it to a shop!!!

Can confirm battery and alt are both good, ~12.6V car off, ~13.6 when charging (+ the alt is only 1month old)
I wired-in a light to the starter trigger wire - light illuminates when the car decides she's going to start (assume its close to 12V), light does not illuminate when car decides not to start, again confirming that the starter is not receiving signal to start when turning the key.

Do EWS problems always throw a code? I have 3 different keys and have had no-start problems with at least two of them (one key is the spare-spare I almost never use). I think my next thing to check is the ignition switch. My old starter's solenoid was going out and I think its possible that the extra amount of current running to the dying solenoid could have burnt out the switch.

That's your problem right there, there is a voltage drop somewhere.

I don't know how the SMG plays into this, but a bad ignition switch is likely, considering your symptoms.
