The Obama Administration May Have Just Sparked a Marijuana Tidal Wave

By John Maxfield
February 16, 2014

The marijuana industry just got a critical boost in its effort to become a massive and completely legitimate business. On Friday, two federal law-enforcement agencies released coordinated statements clearing the way for banks to take deposits from and offer financial services to marijuana producers and retailers without fear of prosecution for money laundering.

To say that this will ignite a revolution in the still upstart industry would be an egregious understatement. "It is imperative that this legal industry have access to banking the same as every other business sector," said Mike Elliot, executive director of the Medical Marijuana Industry Group. "To continue doing business on a largely cash basis creates serious safety issues for owners, employees, and customers."

Bottom line: weed's on the fast track to becoming legalized much as is alcohol. POTUS, while not leading this charge, will quickly accommodate it, federally.

I want see if I get this right.
Tobacco bad, so it's ok to try to stamp it out. Screw personal freedoms!

Weed good. So let's promote its homlugation into the list of legally acceptable substances. After all, it's all about freedom.

I don't use either but I know a few people who have died from cancer after years of using one or the other. All lung or esophageal cancer.

So since I live in a state that legalized, and city that basically decriminalized a decade ago, it doesn't seem to have much affect on people's usage. Well see how it goes once the stores open up but the only real difference is more people smoke in public even though that is still illegal.

Cannabis actually helps prevents lung cancer

if you knew someone who got lung cancer on cannabis, they probably smoked cigarettes as well.

http://www.webmd.com/lung-cancer/new...to-lung-cancer

"May 23, 2006 -- People who smoke marijuana do not appear to be at increased risk for developing lung cancer, new research suggests.

While a clear increase in cancer risk was seen among cigarette smokers in the study, no such association was seen for regular cannabis users."

There are differing views and studies coming to the fore. I don't really care, I just don't want to go through the sissified reaction that tobacco got, again.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/23846283/

Based on their greater access to resources, I tend to give the NIH more weight. Not claiming the matter is settled in any way just saying we need to look at things carefully before we buy the Big biz line or the pot head line on anything.

even if smoking was bad, there are other ways aka vaping, edibles, tinctures. you can even get the medicinal CBD without THC in it so you don't get high. no excuses left.

I'm curious as to the method of smoking that the study participants utilized. Smoking a joint? Bong? Vape? I would imagine the heat and carbon from a straight joint would be worse for someone vs. vaping or cooling it through the water of a bong.

Some other links. Note these are not for profit or political sites

http://www.swedish.org/about/blog/fe...of-lung-cancer

http://m.cancer.org/treatment/treatm...rals/marijuana

I bet the same people who refuse to consider other outcomes are the same ones who bleat "science" in other venues.

There are plenty of organizations that claim to be "not for profit" nor "political" that are completely tainted by politics. Not saying these are, but I'm just making the point.

Thanks for the links....

Edit: Again, most of the studies talk about smoking what amounts to a marijuana cigarette....paper, no filter, weed and fire which produces a lot of the same carcinogens as tobacco cigarettes. A lot of that risk is mitigated (as far as we know) when ingesting weed in other forms.....eating, vaping, etc.
