Where to get a CSL style airbox

Hey all,

My M3 should be on the road this week after being imported from the UK....After much thought I want to get a CSL airbox (replica, Geoff Steel for example) installed in Melbourne...

Anyone know where I can get one? I can't seem to find anyone local that offers it....so not sure where to go....

Thanks! I was hoping not to have to get it sent from the UK but assume that cost is not restrictive....

Here are the two cars (E92 which was sold and the E46 which I should pick up in the next 1-2 weeks)....will get some better shots up soon...

i'd check out the Karbonius airbox. it looks to be way better quality than Evolve's.

I have the Geoff steel one and it's perfect. So if you go down that road I can vouch for the quality

the karbonius looks good

if you came from the UK to here, it's a pity you didn't bring it with you. could have chucked it in the boot of the car and saved yourself several hundred bucks.

I almost did that but the waiting list was 4-5 months when I enquired (due to a group buy) so did not have the chance....

GSR one looks the goods at the stage...Will keep my eye on ebay / for sale and see if one comes up before heading down the new market....

While you are at it....forget the alpha N tune and het yourself an MSS54HP ecu unless you have one in your car already and get the CSL software loaded onto it purchase CSL air rail and Map sensor and engine loom and get it running absolutely spot on! rather than running on the back up program on your ecu, which is hit and Miss at best!

you can modify an MSS54 to do it by soldering in a H bridge i think (at least there's an M3F thread about it)

how much difference does it actually make though, does Alpha N run rough or anything?

Yes Alpha N is not the best way to run your engine! CSL map is spot on....You can check your own ECU to see if it is an MSS54 or an MSS54HP...if its the HP CSL software can be loaded onto it.

If it is the evolve brand you want, there is a dealer local in Sydney. Also, Ejaz@0-60Motorsports is a dealer.

IMO you are better off buying overseas though, as there are plenty of replicas with small price tags.

How do you know it runs fine?

Have you had the timing checked throughout the rpm range as well as the air fuel ratios......and what the ecu sees as your intake temperatures?

BMW fitted a MAP sensor to their CSL for a reason, if they could have done it with just Alpha N they would have.......The CSL ecu is far more advanced with many more parameters than the standard M3 ecu.

I'm not disagreeing with you, Tbh I wouldn't know. He asked if the alpha n tune is rough I gave him an answer of mine "runs fine". There are hundreds of bmws that use the alpha n tune so I can imagine it does it job. I have no doubt that the csl is better.

i ran an Evolve carbon airbox and their alpha n tune couple of years back. never had an issue. did a dyno to make sure air flow mix was ok and all was good. didnt feel anything negative during driving to make me think something was wrong.

i dont know about timing or that sort of stuff but there are COUNTLESS M3's all over the world running alpha n tunes with aftermarket airboxes....im sure some have issues and some don't.

my tune was from Evolve automotive in UK. they have tuned stock M3's, M3's with carbon intakes, supercharged cars (gotten better numbers than tune provided with SC kits). they have also tuned CSL's and gotten some more ponies out of it.

not arguing that alpha n might not be the best solution, but i never had driveability issues as well as many other members.

Around 3k+ once installed, not keen on trying out the cheaper end of the market.

Going with Evolve, karbonious do great work but they are not a tunning M3 specialist and I don't know who they worked with for development/research.

Evolve have put a lot of time effort and money into their research and is a more complete package IMO.

I'm already running the Evolve DME rev match tune so once I decat I'll add a tune with the overrun/burble feature enable and go from there

Sadly they don't do group buys.
