OBD FAULT CODE READER. (which one)

Hi. I apologise in advance if this is in the wrong area.*

I have been looking at getting a fault code reader as they seem to be pretty cheap for a diy kind of thing.*
Iv been looking on ebay and there seems to ne so many ranging from 20-150.*
Could anyone who knows a bit more about this please give me some advice. Or maybe a link to one that i should buy, doesnt have to be anything amazing only going to be using ot on my own car as and when.*
Cheers

if your not set on getting a portable reader id recommend the p.a soft bmw scanner, not only does it read the Engine DME like most generic OBD scanners but it also works for all other modules e.g ABS, Airbag, Instrument cluster e.t.c the list is endless and it also does coding but Best of all its cheap.

I bought a USB cable from eBay for about 20 that came with all of the BMW official dealer diagnostic and coding software as well as the workshop manuals. Nothing beats OEM (kinda)

I have the C110 V3.9. It works very well however, for whatever reason it won't ready anything from the body. I keep getting an error code. It reads everything else just fine. Also, the update software is faulty. The program itself just freezes.

Hi, you don't say what year/model you have, on some early models the OBD port is in the engine bay and you need an extra adaptor. Jim

E46 328ci scanner

I have a 1999 328ci (manual) which has both connectors. The C110 works in the OBD11 port in the drivers footwell to the left of the steering column so no adapter is needed.
The first time I used mine it found O2 sensor No1 bank 2 heater circuit fault and an intermittent misfire cyl 5, both were fixed for less than the cost of plugging it in at a garage.
Hope this helps

Hi
sorry forgot to say, on an early E46 like mine the C110 will only give engine info through the OBD 2 port. For ABS etc you need to use the port under the bonnet with a 20-16 pin adaptor.
