Some people find the GoPro to be too expensive.
I think GoPro has the market cornered. They do great marketing on their products.

I am constantly looking for alternatives though. I ended up with 2 cameras in that link; a Camone Infinity (first) and then a Sony Action Cam AS15 (second). You can make both use GoPro mounts, and there are numerous Chinese vendors selling GoPro knock off mounts. That's how I ended up with my camera setup.

The small, high-quality and relatively inexpensive GoPro camera has been revolutionary for Internet video, especially of cars. Imagine how much awesomeness and hilarity we would have missed without them. Finding ways to integrate the cams into performance cars is becoming increasingly popular among automakers, as well. For example, the 2015 Chevrolet Corvette has its Performance Data Recorder, and Volkswagen is giving GoPros to early buyers of the 2015 GTI. BMW Group is going straight to the source for its rendition, though, with a new app that allows drivers to control a GoPro from inside of some BMW and Mini vehicles.

In July, owners with 2012 or later models equipped with BMW Apps or Mini Connected can download the new app. There are a few hurdles to jump over, though. Not only do users need a model with the infotainment system, a WiFi-equipped GoPro camera is also required. The app also must be installed on an iPhone connected to the vehicle.

Once all of those stipulations are met, the app can configure and control the GoPro through iDrive and display a nearly live image on the infotainment system. Menus are simplified on-screen but still allow users to select among six camera modes, aim it and start and stop recording. While filming, it shows recording time, battery life and signal strength. While BMW's approach isn't quite as nicely integrated as the Corvette's solution, it's interesting to see automakers working to make filming easier. Scroll down to read the full announcement.

It's a hype company. NEVER buy hype companies. It's as good as gambling. They aren't even the best product on the market. They just advertise more than anyone.

The GoPro shoots 4K at like 12 fps. That's not usable. It's a novelty and a marketing ploy that clearly fooled you.

Minnesota guy clearly has a point here though, they haven't got affordable enough.
That is like a completely **** unknown brand. That thing probably has horrible quality. The truth is that 4K TVs are the same price per pixel as 1080p (maybe closer to 75%) TVs right now. That means they are several times the cost. They have a ways to go. Now you have the additional aspect that no media is in 4K right now. You'd have to be a sucker to buy a 4K TV right now. You wait until the media comes, THEN you buy it for a reasonable price!

Wow that's extremely irresponsible reporting and baseless speculation. But it does show you how overhyped GoPro is. You can bet they're significantly overvalued.

It's not out of the question, GoPro mounts have legitimately caused dozens of deaths. Still too early to be reporting it as fact though.

what does that mean? the article doesn't go into detail, just reports the claim by schumacher's son.

camera comes loose and you try to catch it and ski into a tree or off a cliff?

I would assume some of the fixtures cause injuries. I can imagine that the chest fixture would **** you up if you landed on it for example.

Yeah I can't see how a helmet mount can hurt you, but a chest mount absolutely.

Side helmet mount and hit at the right angle could do it.

They all create a pressure point, and some of the aftermarket mounts actually require drilling, never a good idea on a helmet.

Unrelated to the incident at hand, dozens of jumpers have met their demise when a parachute line snagged their camera mount.

Then there is the issue of distraction, people trying to "get the shot" when involved in high-speed sports.
