E46 M3 service history

Hi all,

I've found a 2004 M3 SMG from a very reputable dealer however I would like a second opinion on the service history as it doesn't look right to me. They're asking for 13k dead and the mileage is sitting at 42k including a 6 month warranty which seems reasonable.

Pre Delivery Inspection 11/05/2004 @ BMW GB Ltd, Thorne
Run in Service done 16/07/2004
Serviced 11/01/2007 @ 18342 miles, main dealer - Oil Service
Serviced 01/05/2008 @ 26816 miles, main dealer - Oil & Micro Filter Service
Serviced 05/03/2010 @ 35400 miles, main dealer - Oil Service & routine maintenance check
Serviced 24/03/2012 @ 38139 miles, main dealer - Inspection 2 & Micro Filter Service
Serviced 10/04/2014 @ 40960 miles, main dealer - Brake Fluid Service

In 2008 @ 28,500 both front pads and discs were replaced

The dealer has a invoices for a few bits like: a new drop link, accelerator sensor, smg relay, pdc module, ultrasonic converter and bonnet gas struts.

As far as I'm aware the service schedule should run as follows: running in service / oil / insp 1 / insp 2 / repeat.

In my opinion it should have had an insp 1 service way back and 38k in 2012 is too long to wait for an insp 2. I would have changed the oil every -5k as well.

Any input would be great!

Cheers

. The inspection at 38 is probably inspection one that was mislabeled as 2. It would be excessive to have two inspections by 38k

Missing 1,200 mile service - which was important to do on time.
No oil service until 18K miles? Meh.
Not much history of oil services. Double Meh.
No service for 3 years?

Pull the engine cover and look at how dirty it is.

Is that the running in service? The dealer didn't give me the mileage that was done.

Thank you both - I will probably give it a miss to be honest, it's not worth the risk.

We don't call it that here in the US - but it may be the same thing.

The car is old enough that I would be more interested in the subframe and what the top of the engine looks like...especially given the less-than-frequent oil changes.

The car's maintenance history is spotty. Assume the worst. Do like Alan suggested, get a PPI and have them pull the valve cover. There is a reason why the price is that low. It should be more around 15k.

I'd be very iffy about that car. Personally, I'd rather spend the extra money to know that the car had been properly maintained.
