No AM reception, may tackle this weekend

Well the car is back from the shop and having all the post purchase work done. It is running great, now that the air filter has been cleaned (K&N/Dinan), the valve cover (was cracked) and gasket were done, the oil filter housing and the oil pan gaskets have been done, brake fluid flushed, oil changed, etc etc.

However, the AM radio reception issue is on my todo list. There is NO AM radio reception and we're in metro Vancouver, so not a fringe situation.

Reading up on the web it seems this is a common problem with various BMWs and the answer is usually to locate and remove the antenna amplifier and thoroughly clean all the contacts with electrical contact cleaner, then reinstall.

On the convertible apparently the antenna is in the left rear fender just below the antenna and is accessed by removed the left wheel trim panel in the trunk and then removing two nuts. I pulled the trim back this morning and had a look, it looks like a straightforward but finicky job, so I'll have to wait until I get a few hours to tackle it uninterupted.

The second antenna in the diversity antenna system is located under the convertible top cover. So start to open the top and stop, hold the cover back (if it doesn't stay on its own, mine required me holding it) and you can see a little black box and blue connector on the driver side, under the cover. I believe this is the other unit. It is held on by a torx screw I didn't get a chance to size.

Has anyone else remove these two units and cleaned the contacts? Did it help with radio reception? My wife commutes and relies on the AM traffic station on a daily basis so I'm under some pressure to get this done...

The Bentley manual is somewhat vague about the proper way to full remove the left rear wheel trim cover. I got part way there and muscled it out of the way, but not optimal to actually work on removing the antenna amp. Any links of photos of how to remove it properly would be appreciated.

PS - Useful link on AM radio reception issue, but not applicable in detail to the convertible: http://blog.bavauto.com/10056/bmw-po...-other-models/

My Ride: 2004 330 Ci Cab
I have a 2005 330Ci Cab and have very poor reception. FM is very weak and AM is not there. Purchased the car 2 weeks ago. I believe the roof has been replaced and wondering if antenna was not reconnected or connectors are corroded. Either way I have to get to the components in the rear of the car to check. Does anyone know what I should be looking for, diagrams, components etc. thanks

Bad reception

After reading a thread on the short antenna, I unscrewed mine to see how easily it would come off, only hand tight, then put it back on again. The reception prior to removing was awesome, but after there was breaks/intermittent. I removed the antenna again, sprayed the thread with electrical cleaner and hand tightened and back to normal/great.
