Xenon Ballast or Igniter?

I bought my BMW 325ci Brand new in 2001 and love it. Today I started my car and saw that the drivers side light low bean light was not igniting. I checked the bulb and it looked fine. I then tested it on the passenger's side and it ignited without any problems. I noticed a popping sound when I turned the headlights on without any bulbs installed, and found the sound only coming from the passenger side. I assume that's the sound of it trying to ignite, however the drivers side did not make that sound. Now how would I be able to tell if I should replace the ballast or igniter? And if you can please supply me with parts number for both parts.

-Thanks in Advance.

Sounds like the ignitor. Take the headlights out and swap the ballasts first, then the ignitor.

Thanks for your reply soildjake, but doesn't the ballast power the ignitor? would you have any part numbers?

Swap the parts first to find out what is causing the problem.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but don't our cars have D1S bulbs? I was under the impression that D1S has the igniter built into the bulb, unlike its D2S counterpart.

never called you an idiot. maybe it's an xi thing (or non-US thing), but i've worked on a lot of e46s from all model years. i've never seen a d1s on them. heck even my car (an 06) has d2s.

btw, the link doesn't work. but i know what the site says.

No you both are right, they have both listed as the right bulbs. check this out

http://www.sylvania.com/ConsumerProd...RG-Results.htm
But this is the site I trust most
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...50&hg=63&fg=05
I am currently having probs with my bi-xenons also, they keep flickering on and off when first started, after they heat up it seems they work better but i'm not really sure cuz this is happening within one week. my bulbs are OE so i'm gonna replace them first, getting back to the point, I'm gonna order D2s and you should to brother
