Cog of Death,, Tranny fail-safe mode - Recommendations?

Hi guys,, On Monday I got the love cog of death while driving home. Had to limp it back and then limped it to the local BMW dealer to find out whats wrong.

Here's my car info

2005 325ci
143k miles
Auto Trans

The tech did a diagnostic and didnt find any errors, but recommended I replace my transmission at $5400. Uhh,, what????? He reset the fail safe and I drove it home with no issues.

So what do you guys reccommed? I know when you get the cog of death it could be a millions things that could have gone wrong. Bad tranny, Bad battery, Bad sensor, the list goes on.. What do you guys think I should do?

I love my car, and other than a fuel pump replacement and regular maintenance, the car has been rock solid.

Had the same thing on mine, turned out camshaft sensors were/were going bad. Changed the MAF sensor, it went away, for a little, then it happened one more time and I changed the fuel filter and it all went away...
