Is the stock headunit that good?

My car came with a really crappy JVC headunit that is falling apart. I also want bluetooth to connect to my phone.

I either can get a brand new single DIN headunit off of crutchfield for around $130 that does bluetooth and call it a day. Or I can pick up a stock headunit and buy a bluetooth dongle w/ aux for around similar pricing.

I want a clean look and the stock headunit will provide that but I dont want to if the sound quality will suffer. Is the stock headunit any good for sound quality?

I know that the e46 in the US have their own amp so does that mean it doesn't really matter which headunit I use? Or will the headunit's ability to amp or drive the speakers matter?

Single din headunits are ugly and too flashy but I will be ok with it if the sound quality is better.
I'm not looking to put in a double din this is just a simple solution I'm looking for. I have lots to work on on this newly acquired car

EDIT: I dont have HK system, just standard

The OEM head units were made by either Blaupunkt or Alpine. My 2001 330Ci has an Alpine. Regardless, the head units are very good quality, so if keeping the OEM look is important, I recommend an OEM head unit. Now, there are head unit several versions. There's an excellent post on this forum or on bimmerforums. It lists all the versions as well as their manufacture dates and part #'s. I recommend you buy a later version as it'll have the phone interface port. However, adding Bluetooth won't be cheeep as you'll need several parts, including the BT module.

Every decision in life requires a compromise.

Thanks! I appreciate the help
Yeah I'm going to have to look into how hard/$ it will be to add the bluetooth to the headunit. And now that I'm looking, the stock headunits are starting at $60+ on ebay so maybe I should just stick with a cleaner looking single DIN aftermarket for simplicity. Either way I'm gonna start reading more about the different version out there.

EDIT:

Is the HK headunit and business standard version interchangeable? Thanks
