You would set the backlash by measuring with a dial gauge, then using the correct shims.

As you are only changing the LSD, and not the ring & pinion, it's normally very close to the correct tolerances so minimal shimming (if any) is required from our experience with the BMW diffs we've installed so far.

Lets hope no extra shims are needed, cause they do not exist here

Yeah. I too noticed that BMW does not provide shims, that was why I wondered if there are any shims with the LSD since they are hard to come by. Are even the collapsible spacers available?? Some people have been stretching their spacers and then reinstalling them (UGH!!). I also hear some people have been having huge difficulty finding bearings for specific BMW diffs with certain bearing size & the original koyo bearing is licensed to BMW and can't be sold and BMW won't sell it.. Nuts.

Who makes the BMW rear end? Is it ZF? A lot of other cars use ZF also, they might have suitable shims available. Lets hope you don't need em. LSD rules! It should be mandatory on all cars

Although we don't have the shims available, we do now have the E46 Diff Bearings available. Price is $200 per pair, but when purchased with our LSD, they are $160 for the pair.
