I often see claims like that, but that's not true. The fuel pump always sucks from the bottom, the intake filter is at the lowest part of the pump.

The dirtiness of the fuel tank could be exaggerated. When I removed my old pump, both the motor and the filter is crystal clean... If not for the colors of the plastic, I can almost say it is like new...

The main reason you don't run on low tank levels is due to heat dissipation. The pump uses fuel as coolant. And since the motor is not the lowest part, it may not be submerged in fuel when you're under 1/4 of the tank and therefore if you consistantly running on low fuel, you will shorten the pump life. That's where this theory come from.

Correct with plastic fuel tank fitted cars. Quarter tank full comes from older steel tanked cars where the fuel pickup was attached to the float/ level arrangement. Nothing like a line full of rust half way up a hill

TonyJ I already knew the answer

I just wanted to see what reason is currently doing the rounds.

I know older cars with steel tanks and low pressure carb fuel pumps that didn't/weren't baffled well could cause fuel starvation with hard cornering or hill decents as fuel ran away from the pickup.

Ill also add that while fuel pumps are cooled by the surrounding fuel, much of the cooling comes from the fuel being picked up for this reason, once fuel is under 1/3 or in the case of my s13 1/2 the pump was out of the pool for the most part anyway.

Anyways moving on, hope the OP gets this all sorted

Never would have even thought of this if it wasn't for your comment... and that's what needed to be replaced. Muchly appreciated

UPDATE.

So on Monday the car didn't start again! Took it to a different mechanic today and he checked absolutely everything and realised it was the key ...... which makes me sad because in two weeks I've changed the battery, the relay, fuel pump and filter. Although, all those parts have never been changed in 9 years so I guess they weren't completely a waste of money.

But ye, it was the key lol
