323i High Flow Cats, or Catless headers?

Went to mechanic to help diagnose a rattling noise which happened in a range of RPM's in each gear. He said something with the cats is most likely wrong, and can just replace them as long as I get cats.

My question is how will aftermarket cats fit? Is it worth going high flow cats? Then i also thought about catless headers, but is it worth the $$ and is there any beneficial gain?

Or should i just grab headers off a parts car and just replace them and stay stock.

Any suggestions or info is highly appreciated, just wondering what routes are available and which is the best!

Did he do an exhaust back pressure test on the cats to be sure that they are bad? It's not cheap to have them replaced, so you should be certain they are the problem.

He did not, we just did a drive around and listened very closely.

Is there anyway to do this test by ourselves?
