M54B30 Engine Swap - DME Question

Hey all,

I'm going to be swapping an M54B30 ZHP engine into my 2004 325iT. I have the DME, EWS, cluster, ignition barrel and keys from the donor car to make it a PnP conversion without needing a reflash.

My only question is this, my 325iT is a manual car, and the donor engine is coming from an Automatic. Because I will be using the DME from the donor car, is there any coding needed for the DME to recognize the car is manual? Both the donor car and my own utilize MS45.1 if that makes any difference.

Would really appreciate if anyone knows the answer to this, as I'd like to know any hurdles I may incur before-hand.

I'm in the same boat.. Well, sort of...
Going from 323 Touring M52TUB25 to M54B30 from a 330i.
I was informed to use the same DME from the 323 and use the same harness from the 323. The M54B30 will be installed with its original intake but will use the TMS adapter to install the 323 M52TUB25 cable throttle body. I suspect I will loose a few HP but can't be any worse than factory M52TUB25 (168 hp/181 lb ft vs. 225hp/214 lb ft).

DME tunes for automatic and manual are the same. The donor DME will be looking for the automatic transmission computer, and your RPMs may jump up as you go into a higher gear; this will make rev matching hard too. This is resolved by resetting the DME adaptations in INPA. Then the DME will forget it was ever mated to an EGS (trans computer).

You will want at least a 328i tune on the MS42 DME. MS43 DME conversion from MS42 is pretty straightforward too though.

lets make it easier on you

here in USA 04 325it comes with 2 engine (M56 and M54) but they both have MS45.1 DME, older models are MS43 but not sure in canada.

just reuse your original dme (also an MS45) an just flashed to 330 ZHP software. this is also good down the road in case you need keys for the car as its still matching VIN..

you can then sell the ZHP keys dme ews etc for about $100++.

yours is a bit of work.. start reading http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=1062028

or take the easier route and swap a 328i/528i (M52B28TU Engine).

maybe you will have to code ews and cluster. anyway it's not very hard to be done. here are a lot of inf how to do it.

Mike,
Thanks for the heads up. Already have an engine from a 330i so I'm going to have to go the difficult route. Wish me luck!

Is it really necessary to match the EWS with the advent of the EWS delete? In other words... could you still run the 330i ECU and get EWS eliminated? I'm in the same boat as a few others here... I picked up a 323i auto but going to be converting it to a 6spd + M54B30. I see a lot of people saying you need the original ECU, DME and keys in order to make it work but is it really that important since you can get rid of EWS nowadays?
