How does sales tax work on used cars? Does the seller tell the DMV how much the sale price was, and the fees get paid by the buyer after the car is purchased? So, the buyer always pays sales tax... is that correct? (In CA at least)

Yes.

Buyer brings bill of sales or release of liability paper with the purchase price
written on.

DMV calculates the sales tax based on that purchase price.

Thanks for your attention to this matter.

I sold my 04 330 ci and purchased 04 AW M3 w/ smg

Haha, no actually I really was curious how it works. I now know... but it's hard to believe that the gov't gets tax money every single time a used car changed hands. Gotta love Uncle Sam
