Question To free-air or to enclose

Again, this is one of my many newbie questions, both existing and soon-to-come...

As I've been posting in my previous threads, I will be getting 2 JL Audio 10W6. The question for today is, is it better to set them up "free-air" or to use some sort of enclosure?

What's the perfect size enclosure for the two W6s?

I'd really prefer free-air because of the space I can save
Thanks!

hey man, getting into the audio game too, eh? Well, hopefully I can help you as you have helped me! =)

The JL audio's are good subs. All subwoofers will make some kind of sound when used as free air subs, but they are specifically designed to be in enclosures, UNLESS they are free airsubs. So the W6's will definitely sound much better in an enclosure.

Jl's need a fair amount of space. for the smallest enclosure you'll get a sealed box, not ported. you can get away with as small as 17, but ideally you'd be looking at 28-30 litres. then multiply that by the amount of subs you have! so you'd be looking at a fair size enclosure! I think the best thing you could do to save space is to fiberglass the boot and take the spare tire out. That way you'd still have to spare space for luggage and sh*t. besides, I know u got a lot of buddies with rydes who can ferry your spare over to u!

If you wanted a smaller size enclosure than 2x17, you'd have to choose a different sub, like the Kicker solobaric (hahaha what I'm using), PPI flat piston, Xtant octagonal sub. Those have smaller enclosure demands, but much higher power demands. So there is a trade off, power to enclosure size...

so, sell your w6's and buy solobarics! =) or xtants, which I wish were available here in OZ, but aren't. PPI flat pistons are classics and rare as hen's teeth.

Hope this helped. I can't guarantee it a 100% but I've been playing around with audio sh*t for a while and am a big enthusiast of home and car audio, so I think I'm on the ball here.
