Help with stock system upgrade

I am a lucky owner of a 2001 330i (no ski pass or fold down rear seats) with the stock non-HK sound system.

As many of u know there is absolutely no bass produced with the current setup. I am looking for a basic setup to get some low end, not to impress the lil kiddies. I was thinking adding a JL 12W3 with a suitable amp while maintaing the factory headunit and speakers.

The question I have for u folks is the aforementioned setup gonna transmit enough bass into the vehicle. I've been to a few audio shops and some are telling me that this setup is more than enough to meet my needs, while another shop tells me that i'm wasting my money 'cos there's no way the bass will transmit due to the sound-deadening, lack of ski-pass etc.. I've looked at other posts and they talk about removing the ski-pass plate.. how much does this help?

If any of u have done a similar upgrade could u let me know if a Alpine MRD300 and JL Audio 12w3 subwoofer (or similar setup) will be able to handle the job or do i need to do something more drastic. Like I said I dont want a comp style setup, just enough bass so u get a half decent thump in the car.

Any tips will be greatly appreciated

Here is my setup..

2 12 inch JL W3's with a 500 watt Pheonix Gold amp. I have the ski hole cut out, and I have the subs firing backwards (torward the rear of the car) and those subs really have to work their ass off to get alot of bass in the car. I am not like super thrilled with my setup, but it gives me enough bass so I guess im happy. In my pevious car (chevy tahoe) those 2 subs just sat in the way back, and just pounded like crazy. You could really bass people out, but not in a bimmer... also if you get an aftermarket deck, it will sound alot better than mine.. I just dont want to get away from the stock look. Feel free to PM me with questions. If you send me your e-mail i can send pics

Since no one's mentioned the JL stealthboxes yet - I will. They replace the rear speakers, but fortunately the resulting bass will be firing straight into the cabin.

If you're interested, do a search on them for opinions.
