Getting it painted black would look really cool. Check the fanatics showroom forum. I think there's an M3 there with a black grille.

EDIT: Whoops! Not there... here, towards the bottom:

It is like a toss up both approaches will probably cost the same.. If you go the painted route you should have it match your body color.. It would look sharp.. The hamann black out grill covers look like more of a flat black..

Color coding is a must. Its all about being smooth my brother... Maybe the one thing Wacko Jacko was ever on point about. Get the grill coded.

How much is the Hamann blackout grill? Because if you DIY you can get the exact same result (following proper procedure of course  ) for about $30-40 in materials

I've thought about blacking out mine too, but I'm thinking it would be best to get the Hamman and have it painted rather than the grill itself. That way, if you ever wanted to go back to chrome, you could simply remove it. Otherwise you'd have to buy another grill down the road (IF you ever switched back), However, I'm not sure how easy the Hamann comes off because I don't know what people use to apply it with.

Good questions! I'm wondering the same thing. I want the black-out grill, but I also want the potential to return it to stock form. How easy is the Hamann grill to get off once it is on?

I painted it myself. But be careful to do a good prejob. Get it sanded and get a good paint for crome. then it should hold.
if you study the pic, you can see a little mark on the left kidney. I think I have to redo the left one.

Hmmm...
Think that you should get a second set (Hamman's). The silver grills returned with the E46 and are reminescent of the orginial 2002's...one of the BMW identity areas they talk so much about. You will probably have a better resell on it with the chrome grills. Black does look cool on darker cars.
