software question

simply put... what exactly does software do?
something to do with the timing? valve? ignition?
gotta get the info before i start throwing money at this thing.

no takers? oh well
okay i know that i raises the rev limit, which isnt such a great mod in my opinion. it seems to me that the only performance mods (other than suspension) really worth doing to a BMW are extremely costly(ie. supercharger or internals work)

It also remaps the DME to adjust for a better fuel/air ratio for better performance.
