does it affect the needles when they are illuminated at night?

I beleive most people just use a red sharpie pen that illuminates red at night.

yeah, sharpie by sanford, or any permanent marker.

the needle still illuminates orange at nite with the needles painted red

Just use a red sharpie and "paint" the top of the needles only. At night they still glow orange!!
