How come the US e36 M3s don't have the S50 engine?

I discovered something quite interesting today that the E36 M3 in the US has a different engine than the ones in Europe. The ones in Europe have the S50 engine and the 3.2 litre version makes 321bhp while the US ones just has a normal 3.2 litre M52 engine...

Why is that?

My Ride: is dirty
Isn't the S50 an S50B30 3.0L and the S52 a 3.2L?

didn't feel like typing my own version -

"The reasons for the less powerful motor were largely due to excessive costs for the US market with the original engine and possible difficulty in getting the Euro engine to pass emission tests. The 1996-1999 model years had displacement bumped up to 3.2 L, with 240 hp (176 kW) and 320 Nm (236 ft***183;lbf)"

That's why there were Euro-spec engine and US-spec engines for E46 M3s. I alway wanted Euro-spec...

I think the headers are different though. The US one has more restrictive cats I've heard.

Yes, there are some differences in the headers and some of the other items but the engine is the same.
