Car PC Done!!
It's finally done!! The parts were ordered last winter, but I just got around to setting everything up a few weeks ago. Shout out to my coworker Mike for all the advice along the way, to Rich (SrCsTc) for making me this beautiful touchscreen bezel, and last but not the least, to e46fanatics and mp3car for all the amazing resources.
I originally had the PDA setup, which was not bad, but I was not too happy with the screen size (yes, i am a size queen ) and limited functionalities. Now that I have the 7" touchscreen in place, I feel my car's finally complete. The audio is routed from the pc via aux input to the stock headunit, which is now sitting in the glovebox. The radio harness was not nearly long enough to extend to the glovebox. (Yes, I was heart-broken when I found that out!) I had to cut the harness and extend every single wire to the glovebox (see one of the pictures below). |

Thanks. I probably spent over 1k. Everything is top of the line (or was when I bought them last year.) I did not own any tools before this project, so the cost includes all the tools I had to buy. Before this, I never soldered wires ever in my life, even though I am an electrical engineer, never owned a crimping tool either. Kinda embarrassing. Haha.

I love it man! I'm about to do a carPC install myself, I PMed you some questions I had on mounting your headunit in the glovebox.

Looks great bro!!
On a side note, I've now seen that same surround for the screen on several cars now. Is that a stock BMW part and you put your own screen in thereor did you buy that aftermarket?

nice work. I want to get one in winter, too! THE OEM Navigationsystem is too expensive and has less functions, that's why I decided to build a carpc.
Please post some better pics that I could see your whole system ( also the stock headunit...) Thanks

can you maybe post a list of the things you needed and maybe some reference websites or whatever you needed to complete your project?
This sounds like a fun project. *edit* is it basically the same as this... http://www.mini-itx.com/projects/bmwpc/ obviously yours is integrated to the car much nicer Last edited by jon323i; 08-18-2006 at 07:00 AM. |
