small vs. big meals.

so ive been trying this thing that everybody's been recommending, replacing 3 big meals with 5 or 6 small throughout the day.

my problem is, when I was on the '3 big meal system', i was probably eating more than what most consider a normal meal size. Now I'm not sure what exactly means 5 to 6 small meals.

so what is a 'small meal'?

Also, once a week, I try to have dinner with my parents, which is always out at a nice restaurant (they pay ) Any ideas on how to make that 'a small meal', or is it not too detrimental to have one big meal once in a while? It's pretty much unavoidable...

Same amount of food per day, just spread out more.

As far as large meals go, they should be ok once a week.
