You can't judge the two cars off that clip. Driver has too much input do with the outcome. Especially at a rolling start.

Sweet clip I love the sound of those two cars next to each other!!

Here is why the M3 is still better, even though it may not be faster. You and the 3 friends you can fit in your coupe can get out and beat the crap out of the Lotus driver and his 1 passenger. ehhehehehe Road Rage Rules....Only the strong survive.

Here are both cars specs:

2001 Lotus Esprit
Horsepower 350 @ 6500 RPM
Torque (lb-ft) 295 @ 4250 RPM
Curb Weight - Manual (lb.) 3043

2001 BMW M3
Horsepower 333 @ 7900 RPM
Torque (lb-ft) 262 @ 4900 RPM
Curb Weight - Manual (lb.) 3415

The Lotus has the advantage.

I hate to be the wet blanket here but with all that traffic around that little race could have easily turned into a horrible accident....

Anyway, the Esprit Turbo is one tough customer - remember Colin Chapman's adage of making em quick, but also light The M3 is a luxury car with luxury features (and weight) that just happens to have staggering performance also. Apples and oranges.

also... i have a dumb question. if you are driving along at say 40-60 mph range and someone tries to race you and want to play along do you...

remain in the same gear and slam the gas?

remain in the same gear and slam the gas and then go up to a higher numbered gear when you need to change?

drop down to a lower numbered gear and slam the gas?

go to a high number gear and slam the gas?

(obviously i dunno poop. i am dumb. i have a step and i am in M mode and not S or D.)

Ok, heres the problem with the lotus. My dad was going to buy one before he got his Porsche and we drove it and I did some research on it. There is not doubt that its a fast car and looks awesome, however I have seen an 88' E30 M3 with 210K miles being raced at Road America, but if you try anything close to that with a lotus your engine will be phucked. Lotus engines aren't the most reliable engines and the car still costs $90K. Also its not an everyday car and can't be driven hard at the track consistantly without mechanical problems. So for half the price and twice the engine life I would pick the E46 M3(with my money). If i got the chance to pick one I may go lotus because its a pure exotic, but for a realistic everyday driver there is no doubt the M3 is the winner. Also Put the two cars on a Road Course and I can guarentee you the M3 will come out on top.

isn't it a really unsafe car too?

i thought it was like horrible unsafe in any crash situation and most of the body is made out of fiber glass. I don't know if they still do this at least they used to.

I've seen Lotus Espirit Turbos...

They are nice looking cars but for almost half the money...I'd rather have the M3.

If you are talking about what to do if you are in your STEPTRONIC, then the answer would be to just FLOOR it. I've noticed it doesnt matter if you are in SPORT or regular DRIVE. Once you floor it, you will feel that click, and then engine will open all the way up. M mode in the step lags sometimes during the upshifts.

I would also be inclined to get the M3 for many reasons, but to be honest we have no idea how long these new engines will last over time or how well the mechanical aspects of the car will hold up. BMWs do have a reputation for costly maintenance, but they can last with the nec work done. All in all no-one will really know until they have been our for several years. Just my .02
