HID lens COLOR MODDING
has anyone on here modded their hid's (swapping out lenses, bend shields, using washers to get a cleaner cut off line) I heard e46's projectors sucks compared to other oem manufacturers. Wondering has anyone done it and what are your results? heres some example i found online. the this pic is an E46 with ECE lens (its pretty much clear all around the lens, my cars hid len's has this split line through the middle i heard they are E46 BOSCH DOT lens)
Now this is the same projector using washers to increase the distance from the lens to the shield and bulb, using 3 washers and now with 4 washers ![]() I also read some where that 330ix has the better lens of the e46's they dont have the split line in the middle and their cut off line is cleaner. They use ZKW lens, which are better than ECE ones. I have a 02 330ci and the cut off like looks like **** compared to these pics. Last edited by globol; 05-22-2007 at 05:32 AM. |

The horizontal line you see in the projector has nothing to do with whether it's a 'good' or 'bad' projector. The horizontal line is on the bi-xenon projectors, no line equals single-xenon.

So I have a question about this whole "bi-xenon" and "single-xenon" thing. When did BMW make the non-bi-xenon lights ?

oooo... and another question... what the hell does this have to do with color? and why is this *exact* thread also posted on this forum under "has anyone modded their HID's?" ?

will this work with p46's they don't have a shield inside the projector. its just a lens and a hole for the bulb to go into.
edit. ok i see the shield. what do you use to bend it? its so stiff and i can't take it out of the projector. Last edited by mister wiggles; 05-22-2007 at 10:39 AM. |

single xenon = Xenon low beam and halogen high beam. Bi-xenon lights were introduced for the E46 in 2002 (maybe '01).

I wish i could answer all your questions, But I'm still trying to research this. For all you who are wondering why the light is pointed so high. The person who took this pic has the Hid Projector/lens out of the headlight housing they tweaked it using washers shined it against the wall and took some pics and tweaked it more and took some more. With the reference to the bi-xenon and single xenon i'm not sure. I'm sorta surprise no one has brought this up in the forum. I did a search and couldnt find anything in here. Check out http://www.hidplanet.com/forums theres alot of stuff about modding hids.

that is frickin cool. I wish my HIDs had a straight cutoff. I'm scared to take them apart and mess with them though

Those pics are from HIDplanet.com right? They are not ECEs, they are all E46 DOT bi-xenons. An ECE single beam has a slope cutoff like below:

are you sure? but after modding you can make the cut off straight no? I have Bi-xenon and my slope is the same as the picture you posted. where i got the pic i posted its from hidplanet.com also.

you can make it straight. it requires cutting the shield straight. extremely hard to do. even a small mistake shows up when the xenon is against. it. bending it back make the cutoff sharper, but only to a certain point. using the washer mod adds color, but will eventually make the cutoff fuzzier.

well all i know is that we can mod/or change our lenses to our hids to get a better cut off line or focus more light towards the center.

yes, you can do that with almost any projector for that matter. i will probably take a go at it when my warranty is up.
