Yesterday AM - I added the trailer hitch and rolled the rear fenders (no pics of the rolling) I would like to thank Bubba (@Suburban Autobody) and Mark (3rd Collective) for their offers and kindness.

Everything removed from the spare tire well and the main brackets installed, then pre-mount the actual hitch system...then install the secondary (support brackets).

After drilling any holes I then sprayed black rust inhibitor paint to keep from potentially having any rust issues from this install down the road. I also painted the steel brackets to keep them from rusting (and staining the spare tire and spare tire well)

The Curt Manufacturing hitch seems to be the only one sold in the US for the 3 series. The system seems to be well made and the materials are top notch (I have installed quite a few hitches in my day)...BUT, I have one issue. The receiver is installed as described and THE ONLY WAY it can be...yet, when I insert the tongue into the receiver, the tongue comes into contact with the bumper and I have to bang it back 1/8-1/4" to insert the retaining piece. I have come up with a solution and will correct that issue this week (while I am thinking about it).

I just realised I don't have any of the pics of the brackets all installed and painted...sorry.

OK, the great news - when installed and the tongue in the trunk - you do not even see a trace of the hitch unless you lean down to look - this is a true hid-a-hitch...it also means I can save about $120 on the mtech bumper and not order the rear diffuser since I have one from my ZHP sitting in the basement.

You may want to double check if your standard rear diffuser doesn't fit, RealOEM shows a different diffuser part number and a flap for bumpers with a hitch.

Damn it Don - when ever I see photos of your car I'm reminded how much I want 18" ZHP wheels.

Don - I know what you mean - i have already ordered the trailer hitch parts - from what I hear, the flap is to hide the wiring not the actual hitch or any of its parts. I have the luxury of having the ZHP one here - so I will likely try that one first and see if my idea works and the information is right - if not I will buy the proper unit...but again, from talking to a fanatic in the UK it only hides his wiring

I love your wagon as with all of them - the M135 wheels do look good on it. Have you lowered the wagon

i wanna see u get a small trailer and slap some CH's on there

what is the towing capacity of the car/hitch? i know there are lots of cars running this, and its been well thought out and designed, i can't help but be wary of cracking in and around the spare tire well with this setup

Thanks for the kind words... My Touring has the Sports Package suspension.
I put in Lowering Spring Seats in the front from Bekkers.com. They only lowered it about 1/4" to 5/16" (bekkers info is wrong) but even that small amount makes a visual difference. I tried Eibach Pro springs but the extra weight in the rear of a Touring made the rear too low and I didn't like the bouncy ride.

If you lower your Touring and it's too low in the rear, you can use OEM rubber rear spring spacers. E46s come with a spring 5mm spacer, but you can also get them in 10mm and 15mm thicknesses from the E36.

I am thinking of putting a M-Tech II rear bumper on my Touring in the spring so if you could keep track of which new parts are needed and which ones can be reused, it would be very helpful. When I did the front, I ended up sending a few parts back.

Thanks for posting all the Touring Mod pictures.

I went part by part number to confirm what parts are the same from my oem bumper and the mtech (front and rear) and only ordered the parts it says were different.

I will let you know what I find. Hopefully I will be installing sometime in the next week or so. The rear bumper is on national backorder right now and expected in this week or next.

On the advice of another fanatic touring owner - I am only going to do the front springs for now and leave the rears alone so I can haul stuff

UGH!!!??!

Thanks for the salt (the photos of your car) and for kicking my dog while you were at it (the photos of the one that looks like mine)

That's it! I am getting those wheels. Period! That looks fantastic. MUST HAVE.

I'm on the look out for them. If anyone sees them - don't tell Stuart. Tell me!

I have two questions:
1) what is the towing capacity of the touring?
2) what's the part number for the Lowering Spring Seats from bekkers?

Thanks!

Here's the link to the Bekkers part...
http://www.bekkers.com/Merchant2/mer...=blssuspension

As I said above, the Bekkers info is wrong as you will only get 1/4" to 5/16" lower, but the ride quality will not change and it does help visually.

Thanks!

If I get that part - it looks like I'd need to pull the front springs, insert the part, reinsert the springs - and then get an alignment - correct?

You would need to pull the struts off the car, compress the springs, and then just switch the top spring seats. It doesn't move anything enough to need an alignment.

TRP - I am not looking for M135's at this time - so the next set up is all yours. There are reps...

I sold mine from my ZHP last year to a guy in Washington state. Randy loves them (at least he did at the time).

I have found towing capacity information from nothing to 4500lbs...

the official word from BMW seems to be about 750kg = about 1680lbs
