Are there any advantages/Disadvantages of the KD40 v. the V1?

Sorry for all the radar chat, i'm def getting on today, just want to see which one i should drop the 400 on. I could buy so much more for my car with that money, but it would DEFINETLY benefit me to have a detector, so I want to make sure I spend it wisely.
thanks

I'm still not bought on the v1 or passport 8500, it sucks...

each website has their product as "#1" so its tough to know, i would rather not spend the money, but if the 8500 is ****, when campared to v1, i woudl rather spend the extra 100

just thinking aloud....

A bunch of my buddies have the 8500

and they have nothing but good things to say about it. I like the features of the V1 but it's just too bulky and kinda ugly.

the 8500 is not ****.. It is nicer looking, just as sensitive.. rates better in all the tests..AND costs less..It does not have those stupid arrows which don't work all that great anyway. IMO that extra $150 can be put towards some kind of mod..FYI my friend still runs one of the original passports and I have witnessed it work countless times..It is like 12 yrs old or something..

What is your definition of "all the tests"? The only test that I've seen that rated the 8500 better is the BIASED one on radartest.com.

For me:
1.) I don't buy a radar detector for looks.
2.) Maybe you have owned a V1 but I don't know how you can say that the arrows do not work. Why don't they work?
3.) Both are great detectors but the only downside I see with the V1 is the price.

I guess it is a personal opinion..

ok well here are the reviews:
http://www.motortrend.com/july01/radar/radar_f.html
Automobile.com
"The winner of our last test, the Valentine One, is still very strong, especially in laser and X-band, but it was trounced by the slightly cheaper Bel and Escort models in Ka-band, which is growing in popularity with radar police just a quickly as X-band is waning."
http://www.speedzones.com/test2001/test_2001.htm
and of course www.radartest.com

I say the arrows do not work just because I have seen it produce false directions.. I mean the arrow has lit up but indicating a wrong direction..

I dunno they are both good..
Saving the 100 bucks and quality of detector, also do not forget the smart cord...made the 8500 a winner in my book..

I'm using a V1 in my car right now, borrowed while a friend is in Japan, and I must say that while I haven't done much to warrant a ticket lately, if I did, it would have saved my ass several times in just a few weeks. It has excellent sensitivity in all directions, and I haven't found the arrows to be anything but accurate. the cops around me use K band, so I can't comment on its KA sensitivity, but it picks up K from very far away, plenty of advance warning (even if it's just for one of those dumb "you are going 31mph" road signs... which they do occasionally hide a cop behind). When I have money, I am planning on buying one for myself.

Then I'm going to do a full stealth install project

Now, I am not too familiar with the 8500 but doesn't it only point forward? If so, that right there is a big disadvantage.

Overall, I've heard great things about the 8500, but I've heard better things about the V1.

It seems that you are very happy with your purchase and I am more than pleased with my V1 so as along as nobody is getting tickets, we're all winners.

Screw the ticket issuing popo.

Had many, V1 best!

I've had Escort and Bell they worked OK but didn't last. If I spend $300+ I don't want the hardware crapping out. The V1 will last, the sun can't kill it! Also, you can update the V1 when new technology comes out, for less than any new detector.

The arrows and everything works on the V1. It's the best I've ever had!

jus reading this thread, and was curios how to know which bands my locals popos are using? do the dectors pic of up both bands or not?

my friend once pointed out an interesting argument with the V1 and another detector of its caliber saying "both are relativly the same with their radar detecting ablities. the only diff is that the V1 tells u from where its coming from. and i dont know about u, but if my radar detector goes beep, im going to slow down regardless if its from in front of me, behind me, or to my sides... it doesnt matter where it is. so for hundred extra bucks it wont make much of a difference."
