I am a die hard MT guy for sure. But I recently drove a new 328i with step. It was a little impressive. Over in "manual sport" mode it shifted quite quickly but still my left foot fell asleep with nothing to do... I'll still take a 6MT anyday, at least for another 10 years or so anyway.. ha ha..

I like my manual. I live in LA and I hate traffic, no matter what transmission I have.

Does BMW clutch make your knee hurt? This is my first manual car, sometimes my left knee hurts from driving so much. Am I weak??

Auto w/ step

Does not bother me in the least. I find it nice to be able to push it into auto mode if the occasion calls for it (traffic, early morning). Sure I have the bottom of the power lineup (323 Auto...) but who cares. I still love my car.

When the auto has fufilled it's possibly all-to-short lifespan, a manual may replace it. Never know.

All of you who are saying manual sucks or is a pain in traffic must not have ever driven manual regularly in traffic or you just don't know how to drive a manual in traffic. Most of the time i don't even really think about it when driving in traffic it's just become natural to me. If you know your car well and actually pay attention you can drive in traffic even heavy traffic with very little braking. I dread having to drive automatics in traffic, i absolutely hate braking. I have driven over 25 cars, mostly automatics and i have yet to find an automatic that i can coast in while in gear slower than i have coasted in any manual car while in gear.

I have a 323i, by no means a "fast" car, so Im ok with the auto w/tip especially because of LA traffic. If I had a faster car like a 330 or M3 Manual all the way.

i think the poll is unfair, since non M3 drivers dont get a chance to vote SMG its kind of a narrower thing. Anyways this is totally an "IMO" topic so yeah, cool to discuss but nothing to fight or argue over. on that note.... SMG FTW

ive pretty much decided that i will never own an auto again for my "fun car" it totally ruins the car, its understandable for daily drivers, but i think nothing beats a good old fasion manual

I don't think I'll ever own an automatic.... I've owned a three on the tree, 4 speed, two 5 speeds - one sporty and one not, and currently have a 325i w/ SMG.... I'm really happy with the SMG and haven't had any problems. I enjoy the paddles, the smooth up and down shifts, and the 6 speeds. I also enjoy the fact that the car is pretty rare, a self serving car fact that can be cashed in at cocktail parties!

While I love my 325cic (sport/premium), I wish it were a manual. I grew up in Boston driving only manual and now drive in DC. Traffic sucks, but I agree, if you grew up with MT, it justs becomes part of you and you don't get annoyed. The auto was a compromise to the wife, who gets motion sickness.
Still, I love the car, especially off/on ramps, and out of the compromise, I got a bike to satisfy the need for shift speed....at least on the weekends.

SMG was an option in 2004. If I remember correctly the car also had to be equipped with the sports package.....

I have never owned a slushbox. When I bought this car, I had to look far and wide for a manual tranny.

I think I found the perfect car. Does it need any mods???
