A/C Compressor Replaced

I had to replace my a/c compressor. At first, the a/c system did not cool very well when the car was idling. But it worked well as long as the RPMs were over 2000. Then, the compressor started to make a loud noise. I took it to my a/c repairman and he evacuated and recharged the system. This did not cure the loud noise. And I was not going to use the a/c with it making so much noise (although it still did cool the car). I figured it was just a matter of time before the compressor seized and took the belt with it. So, I went for a new compressor. The whole job cost nearly $1700 (at an a/c specialist, not a dealer - that would have cost nearly $3000).
