thanks for the help everybody, its greatly appreciated... i plan on doing ebay headers w/ a race cat in a month or so which will kick off my summer performance modding spree (headers, diff, software). Cant wait
What size cat must i buy? 2.25"?

Dont do a race cat it is an extreme waste of money. You wil not notice a difference between race cats and normal cats. The whole concept of race cats is retarted how many race cars do you know that have cats. Good choice though with the ebay headers you will love them.

you should add the cat info to the first post, as well as the main ebay sellers
like this deluboz(generally most expensive) gmotogarage(most likely to give you the right header) trader-nas boombop(feeling lucky? might get the wrong ones) and seriously, this needs to be stickied, period.

Why do you need to get cats? As already stated, cats or no cats, getting the headers makes your car illegal in CA. The only reason to get cats is to cut down on noise.

Yup... you'll fail the visual, you'll fail the diagnostics and you may even still fail emissions without a fairly restrictive cat (which would defeat the purpose of getting the headers.) So yeah, you'll need to give a reason for the guy to push "yes" on that computer screen, lol.
My last Smog check guy was questioning my intake and said I can't pass with it but was nice enough to let me off the hook (after him dicking me around for a little bit and later asking if I worked for the government ) Although I felt that he was just tired since it was the end of the day, so you can try that tactic as well

Sadly we're not all in CA. Here in the UK you can use pretty much whatever exhaust system you like, but it's got to pass gas emissions analysis during annual MOT test (there are also roadside spot checks here too) which the OEM cats will. What components you use for the rest of your system, headers, cat-back system, is up to you, although you must have some kind of muffler / silencer, although fairly loud ones are allowed.
